What I Stand For
Equitable, Accessibile, and High Quality Education for all of Barrington.
My name is Adam Stearnbourne, and I’ve been a professor in higher education for over 20 years. During that time I’ve taught at a wide range of institutions, including large public universities, small liberal arts colleges, and continuing education programs, with an equally wide range of learners. Currently I’m a professor at Curry College, a small liberal arts college just south of Boston. What makes Curry unique is its Program for Advancement of Learning (PAL), a thriving program focused on educating students with learning differences and those who are neurodivergent. Over the past 10 years, having these students in my classes has taught me how diverse learning can
truly be.
Closer to home, my five-year-old daughter is finishing her first year at Sowams. We moved to Barrington three years ago in part because of the schools. We wanted the best learning environment for our daughter, and we’ve been very happy with how her first year has gone. I also volunteer at the school library once a week. Supporting our daughter’s education matters to us, and I’m fortunate to have a schedule that allows it. A year of volunteering has given me some valuable insight into the school.
Finally, while not my own experience, my wife taught high school in Pawtucket for five years, including throughout the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. She would come home each day and share what she’d experienced in the classroom, and I saw firsthand how hard she worked and the sheer number of hours it takes to be an engaged
educator. I know what having a teacher in the family is like, and the commitment and passion the profession demands.
As a member of the Barrington School Committee, I hope to use these experiences to keep education in Barrington equitable, accessible, and of the highest quality.
